Mock Batman "Hero" Cover

Back when The Dark Knight Movie and the Hulk Hero Covers for Marvel (where a lot of different artists did a drawing of the Hulk on a blank mock-up cover) were coming out, I decided to do something like that for Batman. I made a mock-up Batman cover, and handed them out to some coworkers to try and do our own, just for fun.

I started three different versions of a possible image for it. I tried doing one that was more in the line with the movie versions of the characters, in a tribute to Heath Ledger, but it just wasn't really working for me. I love drawing Batman characters, yet they are always a real challenge. It's so hard to draw something new that no one has ever drawn before for Batman, so it's tough coming up with a new idea.

I have always loved Batman Beyond, and wish the main Batman book would be more of a legacy book, where something like Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller DOES come to pass, and/ or Bruce gets old and hands down the Mantle. So I decided to instead try something along those lines.

I tried a drawing with a "new" Batman Beyond type, and a new Red Robin sidekick. I think it would be cool if Dick Grayson finally took over for Bruce, and then Tim Drake became the new Nightwing, Robin went back to Stephanine Brown, the former Spoiler/ Girl Robin. Then Red Robin would be Bruce's son Damien, and then introduce Terry Gillam (the Batman Beyond of the future) as a little kid, that will one day take over from a old Bruce, much like the BB show did. Also I would keep Kate Kane as Batwoman, I like her, and Oracle stays the same, as well as Renee Montoya as the Question. Keep The new Blue Beetle kid, but make him like the Bat-crew's errand boy to deal with stuff outside Gotham. I don't know, just thinking. I could so go on and on, but...

Anyway, back to my drawings... These two are my Dick Grayson as Batman in a cross between Batman's costume and the black costume of Batman Beyond cartoon. I live for the Black Batman costumes like the movie and think it just looks more like he should then in the gray and blue, as much as I love that costume too. I just did the Batman Beyond costume and added a cape. LOL

Enjoy though. Maybe I'll try and finish these three, into finished pencils, but I just kinda let it go too long, and don't think I'll go back to them. I wanted to put a very crazy detailed skyline in the back of the piece with Red Robin, so maybe I'll finish that one...

Let me know what you think...

Corey

Hey. These are a little too "sketchy" i can't see as much as I would like. That said, I agree with a lot of what you said:

I'm a little behind in my batman reading. i haven't even read RIP yet, but isn't bruce dead (for now?) -- I always thought Tim should take over (he did briefly in the late 90s, and he wore a black costume, but i digress). I don't know batwoman, but what happened to the deaf batgirl, i thought she was a decent character. Oracle as always is great, but I don't love a girl robin. that was the weakest character for me in dark knight returns and i didn't really know spoiler (didn't she die?).

Other than that, i love batman beyond and the movie with the joker is amazingly demented. I don't want to give that ending away, but i'm sure you've seen it.

Otherwise, I'm enjoying the blog. keep em coming. I don't have many outlets to wax philosophically about super heroes. so thanks for giving me one -- even if this is never read.

Ok, I'll boost up the levels, make them darker, so you can see. Thanks for letting me know!

Yea, Batman is "DEAD", and there will be a NEW person under the cowl, and a new Robin, but thats all I can say right now. I'll be able to discuss more when it comes out!

PS- I'm enjoying your blog as well...

Totally agree with pretty much every movie you talked about, except, I understand and was a little entertained by Jumper. LOL

Ok, Mitch, let me know if those are much more clearer. I upped the levels on them all. It's hard with pencils, because it's so light, and yet it looks good in photoshop, but when you post it...

Hopefully you can see these better!

Yeah man, that's better.

There was a preview of Red Robin #1 cover on Newsarama, and one kid said this:

"Okay, Geoff said he and Francis were working on a book together (or maybe it was vice versa). Geoff has stated many times he’s wanted to work with Dick Grayson. Didio put Nightwing and Flamebird back into Superman mythology. Grayson had to become either Batman or Red Robin. Geoff loves the Kingdom Come storyline with Dick as Red Robin.

I think Hush will become Batman, Dick will become Red Robin, Damian will be Robin, and Tim Drake will be the new Alfred. And Jason will become the new Hush. I, however, will stay the exact same as I was before R.I.P. and Final Crisis and not read any Batman books."

I LOVE this idea! Hush as Batman (because he did surgery to look like Batman) is so cool! But alas, I doubt this will ever happen. I'll bring it up at work, it's a very, VERY cool idea. I'm sure Alfred and Dick and Tim and Selina would have something to say about that, wouldn't they...?
