WOW! I finally finished this one.

This piece got out of control quickly, lol.  I began by sketching a cool Etrigan the Demon, and Merlin besides him.  I really liked it, and decided of that as the workings of the Demon Knights "52 by 1" cover.  I put it aside for a while while I finished other pieces.  When I went back to this one, I wanted to at least add the Horsewoman character to the layout.  I did her separately, and while that was coming out great as well, I had this idea to do a cool montage of the rest of the characters to get the whole Demon Knights crew in the cover.  I worked up The Shining Knight headshot, and then Savage I did separately as well.  After all those pieces were sketched out the way I wanted them, I tried combining them all into what will be the final piece.  Thats when I realized that this piece was GINORMOUS!  LOL

It turned out to be a QUADRUPLE-gatefold cover in the end.  The original is actually drawn on three 11 x 11 inch pieces of laser copy paper, making it a whopping 33 x 11 inches BIG!  That translated into the piece you see above, a quadruple-gatefold cover.

I actually didn't take very long to draw, in all honesty.  The reason it took so long to finish was because I was dreading doing the entire thing in markers, because of the sheer size of it.  But once I finally just sat down and did it (one character at a time), it not only went by fast, I actually had a BLAST doing it.  I really love this piece, and it is now one of my bigger accomplishments not only in this "52 by 1" project, but in general too.  Much like my Green Lantern Corps piece and my Darksiders piece.

There were two assignments I missed during the Sketch Attack Blog Series I was a part of this past year.  I did Star Wars, Sherlock Holmes, Godzilla, Medieval Times, GI Joe, Zombies, TMNT, Street Fighter, Dr. Who, Dick Tracy, Wild West and the Shadow.  The two I missed were Image Comics and Lobo.

This did not sit well with me.  It was really REALLY bothering me that I missed these two assignments, and because of my OCD I could not let it go. Hence the piece you see above.  I decided to combine the two assignments I missed into one and do The Savage Dragon versus Lobo!  LOL

I really love this piece actually.  Came out just as I saw it in my head.  Best thing about it?  Dragon is in his cop uniform with the handle bar mustache! OH YEAH!

So we begin the FINAL half of my "52 by 1" project.  The countdown to having drawn all 52 covers begins today with Green Lantern #1, above!  25 more covers to go!  Next up is Demon Knights #1, but I also have some other pieces to post as well, so be on the look out for a those.

Also, it's the COUNTDOWN TO NEW YORK COMIC CON!  Only 9 days until the EVENT of the year! Starting on Thursday, I will start discussing and showing everything I will be doing at the show.  Everything I have to sell, show, draw, give out, freebies, sales, promotions, you name it!  It's gonna be a GREAT week leading up to the show, and the show itself is gonna be OFF THE HOOK!

This is the 26th "52 by 1" piece that I've done, which means... THIS IS THE HALF WAY POINT!  I am now half way through the project.  I know I'm off schedule by a lot but still, I'm very happy with myself and the fact that I made it this far.  I may not finish by December 31st like I wanted to, but I will complete the project and being half way through feels great.  I hope you have been enjoying the ride as much as I am.

I got about six full pieces yet to post leading into New York Comic Con next month.

"52 by 1" pieces of All-Star Western #1, Firestorm #1, Green Lantern #1, and Demon Knights #1.  I also have Sketch Attack Savage Dragon vs. Lobo to post, and finally Higher Earth #1 cover.

I'll be post all those as I finish them, and then it's a MAJOR marketing push to the #NYCC!  More info to come on that, as I just about finish up preparations this week.

My Superboy #0 Cover Correction

Happy Friday Everyone!

Every so often I am asked by editors to do art corrections of a various nature on the covers to DC's books.  I wanted to post one recent one, for the cover to Superboy #0.  The editor came to me and asked if I could add in Superboy's foot.  It looked a little awkward that if was not showing since he was supposed to be jumping out of the "ripped interiors".

I said "yes, I CAN!" LOL

So in the style of the original artist (in this case, the always AWESOME R.B. Silva), I drew a foot.  I tried to match the art style of R.B., thinking, how would R.B. would have drawn this foot if he drew it.  I then took a piece of paper, light-boxed over the cover image, and drew the foot so it matched in scale.  I scanned in the foot, went to the color file of the cover, and dropped in the new foot.  I then backed up the blacks, and colored the foot matching the color in the file.  So not only do I match the artist but I also match the color and style of the colorist.

Below is the original solicited cover compared to the final revised color that now has the foot I drew and colored on it.  I also posted the 'foot' drawing I used to patch it all from.  Just another look at a small contribution the likes of which I do everyday at DC!

So here it is! The cover to this year's art of book, "Twenty-Twelve".  It features my newest character, Zephyr from my recent creator-owned concept called StarLanders ©.

The art of book will be available EXCLUSIVELY at this years New York Comic Con, October 11th-October 14th!  It features some of my best work from the past year, 2012.  It'll be $20 at the show, and you get a FREE sketch of any character you would like in the back of the book or on a separate bristol board.  The book is 36 pages and measures 5.5 x 8.5 with a glossy cover.

Another book I don't think people gave a chance to.  It was fun!  Wow, imagine that?  A FUN comic book?  No wonder it didn't sell (sic).  I don't get it.  But whatever.  I'm glad that this incarnation lives on in the  JLI comic.  No wait, that book is cancelled now too.  WHAT IS WRONG with you people?  UGH!  LOL  Well, at least the character will continue on in DCU Presents and just be in the new DCU.  I hope it's not the last we see of him either way, because i really love the design and the re-imagining of the character here.

I'm really happy with this piece mainly because it tells a story, and I need to do more of these type of covers, rather then the classic pin-up covers.  I originally thumbed out this piece while trying to draw the Demon Knights cover, and it had OMAC in more of a straight up standing posture over the child. I liked it a lot, but I changed it to having OMAC kind of hunched over the child and I think it works so much better.  The key is... don't you just want to READ the HELL out of this?  If this was the cover to OMAC, I would totally buy it, just to see what it is that is going on between OMAC and this kid.  I think the BEST covers are ones that make you want to run home and read the comic you just bought.

No one ever really comments on my Blog anymore, so I guess just enjoy the 24th cover in "52 by 1".  Demon Knights and Green Lantern coming up next, and I'll finally hit the half way point!  Crazy, huh?!

Also, the unveiling of the cover to the second volume of The Art of Corey Breen, which will be sold exclusively at New York Comic Con in October!

Batman.  The Dark Knight.

I think you know by now how much Batman means to me.  I've talked about it so many times.  I've also talked about how HARD it is to draw Batman for me.  I love drawing the character so much, but I'm not afraid to say that he is easily the hardest super hero for me to conqor.  Well, him andSuperman for that matter.  I struggle mostly with trying to keep a consistent look to Batman.  I think the best Batman artists have succeeded because they draw him a certain way very constantly if nothing else.

If you look back even to the previous 52 by 1 Batman covers I did (Batman and Robin #1 and Batman #1), my Batmans all look different, and I wish that wasn't so.  I look at my favorite Batman artists like Neal Adams, Todd McFarlane, David Mazzucchelli, Jim Aparro, Joe Quesada, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Simon Bisley, Greg Capullo, Scott McDaniel, Damian Scott, Joe Mad!, J Scott Campbell, Alan Davis, Kelly Jones, Mark Silvestri, Mike Mignola, Tony Harris, and countless others for inspiration. That's a HUGE range of looks for Batman.  So you can see that there are so many interpretations to him that I love, making it hard to nail down a consistent look.  But, honestly, I do KNOW what I WANT my Batman to look like!  I really do.  Achieving that is what makes drawing the character so hard for me though.

I know I want him to look slightly "jacked" like he does in the Batman Animated Series from the 90's.  I know I want mine to have a jaw like Capullo or McFarlane give him.  I know I want a cape that's out of control and long yet very clean like Jim Lee.  I want to draw detail and texture like Joe Quesada.  I want him to look dark and angry and disturbed, not cartoony.

All these things really weigh heavily on me when drawing Batman,  But I think with this latest piece, I really nailed what I want my Batman to look like.  It took studying Daredevil Father to find it.  What I came up with I feel is the ideal way I want to draw Batman from now on.  A cross between Frank Miller, Jim Lee, and Joe Quesada, but yet... ALL Corey Breen!

Really proud of this piece!  Makes me reaffirm my love for Batman and my confidence in drawing him.  Can't wait to tackle Detective Comics #1, and Batman Inc! #1 now.  Just hope I keep it consistent with this look, even though for Detective, I want to draw him BEING a detective, my favorite thing ABOUT Batman.  And for Batman, Inc! focus on the Batman's of the world more then Bruce Wayne as Batman,

So, everyone let me know what you think!  You really need to see this drawing in person too.  It's much cooler full size!  I am pretty much selling ALL 52 by 1 pieces at New York Comic Con (NYCC) in Artist's ALley, but I am NOT selling this piece.  I think I'm keeping this piece.  At least for a while.  Like I said, Batman really means that much to me.
