"52 by 1" - Week 12 - Captain Atom #1

Captain Atom © DC Comics
By Corey Breen

Almost had to do this one twice because my markers were running out! Dead markers are the worst, it can ruin the drawing. But I saved it by switching back to my Copic Markers. But now those are dry too. So, I'm gonna have to buy more Letraset Markers weekend. Going through them like water with these pieces!

But all this means I can't go on to the next piece, which is Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 until I get more markers. Hopefully I can get them soon so it doesn't back me up too much. Don't want to mess with my groove I got going on these!

Hope you like Captain Atom #1 though!

"52 by 1" - Week 11 - Supergirl #1

Supergirl © DC Comics
By Corey Breen

And look who's BACK on schedule with this project! Me, baby, me!

Here's Supergirl. No where near as good as Mahmud Asrar has been on the real title right now, but I did my best! I have always had an affinity for Supergirl, have always loved drawing her, and this piece was no different.

I'll tell you what though, I do miss her mini-skirt, lol.

Hope you likey!

Captain Atom is NEXT, but stay tuned this week for a special piece in honor of a certain HUGE movie coming out this week!

"52 by 1" - Week 10 - Superman #1

Superman © Corey Breen
By Corey Breen

Did my best with this one. Not a big fan of Superman. Never have been, never will be. But I do like the figure I came up with for this piece. Just couldn't really place him anywhere in any kind of background, so I just threw in the ole blood splatter effect. Such a cop-out, I know, but whatever. Some ideas you just can't force, and I didn't want to completely ruin the piece by making up some half-a$$ed background that didn't fit at all.

At least the blood splatter gives the piece the movement and energy I was going for with the piece. I wanted an angry, ready to pounce Superman drawing. I think I achieved that, so I'm happy. I just ALWAYS have trouble drawing his face. It never looks like the Superman face I see in my head, which is more in line with the cartoons then the comics. Yet, every time I make his face more like the cartoon it just doesn't jive with my style and looks out of place. So it is what it is here.

I was actually very happy with the way the Letraset markers were flowing. It wasn't like normal. Maybe I was drawing on the back of the paper, but the ink wouldn't really take, so it was more wet then usual, making it seems like a water color painting more then a marker piece. Can't really tell, because I did clean a lot of it up in Photoshop, but it was a happy accident. Need to do some water color pieces again, I LOVE watercolor!

But here is Superman all up in your grill!

Supergirl #1 up next!

On a ROLL!

Couldn't WAIT to post this one! Ever since they announced the new Assassin's Creed III game, which will take place in the American Revolution, I have been freakin' out with excitement! I am totally going to miss the whole Rome angle and Ezio, but this game looks SO amazing, it is gonna be so GOOD! It comes out in October, and the trailer can be found here:

Tell me that doesn't look INCREDIBLE?!

Now I just have to START and finish Assassin's Creed II Revelations, before this game comes out!

lol

Hope you like the piece,

"52 by 1" - Week 9 - Grifter

Grifter © DC Comics
Created by Jim Lee
By Corey Breen

And now... Grifter #1!

I've always LOVED Jim Lee's WildC.A.T.S and it's characters. I grew up in the 90's and Image comics and all it entails we're my idols and heroes even more so then Marvel or DC characters.

As I got older, Jim Lee's characters were really the only ones who kept getting cooler and cooler as the years went buy after they were bought by DC. Between Alan Moore's stuff with the INCREDIBLE Travis Charest (who drew the BEST Grifter along with Aaron Wiesenfeld) to Dustin Nguyen's awesome run with Joe Casey, WildC.A.T.S have always been an awesome cast of characters! This is really the first time I think I've ever drawn any of them though, and that's a shock, and one I am glad I remedied.

I hope you like my version of Grifter. And be sure to pick up the new series, it is one FIRE right now, and it seems like Rob Liefeld is gonna bring the HOUSE down in upcoming issues!

I actually dedicate this piece to my buddy Joe Mulvey (@JoeMulv) who is a HUGE fan of Grifter! I do this not only because he likes the character so much, but because Joe is an amazing inspiration to me. This is because of his work ethic, his drive, his determination and his talent for making comic books. He is the epitome of how it is done; through hard work and not stopping until you achieve your goals. For him, that goal is to make comic books and he is doing it and doing it WELL!

I thank him for reminding me everyday to work hard and draw, draw, DRAW until your hand bleeds.

Thanks Joe, this one's for you!

Be sure to check his ongoing comic book, SCAM from Comix Tribe right here at this link-

Next up for me is the week nine's "52 by 1" piece. It is Superman #1!

Before THAT though, I have an AWESOME piece I want to share with you tomorrow that I'm really proud of and excited to show you!

Til Monday,

"52 by 1" - Week 8 - Wonder Woman

Woman Woman © DC Comics
By Corey Breen

As promised, catching up on the "52 by 1" covers here! Woman Woman #1!

When I started this project of trying to draw all 52 amazing DC Comics' The New 52 on my own, I was looking forward to doing Wonder Woman a lot. Much controversy over her pants/ no pants, I wanted to try my hand at her new digs! I was very glad that Wonder Woman got picked out of the hat early on. When I started sketching the first ten covers out, this one was one of the first I did. I was VERY excited to get to finishing this one. But by the time I finished sketching it, she went from pants back to no pants. I like the pants. I was excited about the pants. So I drew her with the pants. LOL Hope she goes back to that look.

Very proud of this piece. I love her stance and her posture, showing that she is a warrior/ amazon, yet she is very slick, sleek and sexy too. I feel I really nailed the kinda piece I wanted to do for this cover; very regal and strong character pin-up. I was VERY influenced by the Josh Middleton cover for issue #614 of the last Wonder Woman series. He is AMAZING by the way!

One last comment about this one. The background to this piece is actually a real place, not from my head. It is located in Kauai. The reference photo I took high above the mountains & rain forrest of the Grand Canyon of Kauai overlooking the ocean on my honeymoon a couple of years ago. Amazing view! I'll post the real pic in the next art drop when I post all of February's covers sans logos and trade addresses.

Grifter tomorrow! Another piece I'm so psyched to finally show everyone!

Talk to you tomorrow!

"52 by 1" - Week 7 - Animal Man #1

Animal Man © DC Comics
By Corey Breen

FINALLY!

Animal Man #1 today, and then I post Wonder Woman #1 cover tomorrow, then Grifter #1 cover on Sunday just to catch up to my schedule for these.

Due this week wass Superman #1. Superman #1 is drawn out, but now I have to do final pencils and then markers on it still. In fact, I have Superman, Supergirl, Captain Atom, Aquaman, Red Hood & Outlaws, Batman and Red Lanterns all on deck, so I may not only just catch up to my schedule, but go ahead of it. How bout THAT?! Cool right?

I also have a surprise post mostly likely Monday or Tuesday of a really cool piece I did I can't wait to show you all.

But for now, today, just enjoy this Animal Man cover, and if you are not reading this book, FOR SHAME, because it is an AWESOME book! It's really, really well done on all fronts! The power of comic books is in full force each issue of this book that comes out, trust me.

Talk to you tomorrow!

GO JOE!

Did I NOT mention that GI Joe was my favorite thing of all time?! When the Sketch Attack assignment came down this past month, I just couldn't HELP myself and I did 11 sketches and 3 final drawings! I love GI Joe THAT much.

Hope you liked the three pieces of the greatest ninjas EVER!

And if you never have, go out and watch GI Joe Resolute cartoon. It is the BEST GI Joe ever made. Also, I really really love GI Joe vs. Transformers, the Jae Lee comic. That was brilliant. And I love the new series, Cobra. The death of Cobra Commander was really really GOOD! And going back a ways, I hold near and dear to my heart, the entire Marvel Comics run, so all those collections, I think it's up to volume 15 or 16 right now. Gotta go buy the newest ones I haven't gotten yet myself!

Ok... in other news, no, I have NOT forgotten about all my "52 by 1" covers that are due. I am actually busting my A$ and drawing 10 of them all at the same TIME so I can catch up completely here. I AM changing around the order though. Should be something like this, but don't hold me to it:

Animal Man
Wonder Woman
Grifter
Superman
Supergirl
Captain Atom
Aquaman
Red Hood & Outlaws
Batman
Red Lanterns

Animal, Wonder Woman and Grifter are pretty much 90% complete and will easily be post next week, and Superman, Super Girl and Captain Atom are about 60% done, and should be week after that.

Can't wait to show you all that, and a couple of other cool surprises next week as well.

Next Sketch Attack assignment is in, and it's LOBO! So gotta get on that too.

See ya SOON!
